12:00 pm
>> reporter: aubrey huff! there's aubrey, who did actually play in the postseason, so does, indeed, earn a second ring. >> reporter: very limited role this go around but everybody remembers what he did two years ago. >> reporter: javier lopez! are you guys happy now [ crowd cheering ]. >> reporter: i'd say they're happy. >> reporter: they're finally getting their satisfaction. >> reporter: they were ready to rush the street a few moments ago and now they have their own special place. we are at the starting route but 15 minutes ago to 45 minutes ago, they changed the route. and we got no float down here but we had major players. we still have more players! >> reporter: again the crowd is just -- it has really come to
12:01 pm
life here as we go back to you guys in studio. everybody happy on this orange wednesday! at this parade, guys. >> i tell you. great shots from chopper 5, great job, guys and yeah be we should explain that happened was there were so many people still arriving because it's such a big crowd that the players had to literally go back around the beginning of the parade section there where vern and roberta were stationed because that little section got missed. and the players felt that they didn't want to cheat anybody out of this today so they doubled back around the block and came back through and took their time and waved. as we look at this, i see the faces of the little kids, we saw the photo there of brandon crawford when he was a kid and the poseys, the crawfords, timmy lincecums, those are the willie mays and mccoveys in the crowd right now. we continue our coverage of the
12:02 pm
parade of champions parade. we'll be right back here on cbs 5. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
12:03 pm
12:04 pm
welcome back to our special live coverage of the parade going down market street. it will end up there at sisk center plaza where they tell us a million people are standing by along the parade route and at the sisk center today. ken bastida along with -- our team out there as -- there he is, sergio romo. knocking it for the crowd, got the shades going, the hat spun around backwards, the hoodie and the whole business.
12:05 pm
this guy, comes out of nowhere, makes his way through the minors and bam. >> i think he's stock shot up and he is a legitimate closer. if you look at the beginning of the season, the giants lost their 2nd baseman, freddy sanchez, brian wilson for a year and sergio romo steps up and bams one of the -- became one of the best closers in baseball. >> we told you we would be giving you live kornlg and the best perspective. we want to go to juliette goodrich who i believe is in a specially motorized vehicle giving us a perspective seen only on cbs 5. juliette? >> reporter: hello, ken. yes, we are with mobile 5 and we actually got lucky. we hopped on with security. so no, we're not in a convertible, we're in a go-cart but that's okay. we're here with all of the fans and that team is taking the video for us. you can see the adoring fans as
12:06 pm
they see the players drive by. you can see the fans lining the street. and the cable cars as well. a lot of sximent here and -- excitement here and ken and dennis, these players are just so grateful for all of the fan support, not just through the world series but in talking to them today, it was from the start of the season. these are fans that have been there through thick and thin, they are the die hard fans and they appreciate it. all the ticker tape coming down and the balloons, what a sight to see. >> i think the players to a man would tell you these are the greatest fans in the world. sometimes you come to work, dennis and it's work and there's days like this when you come to work and it's really not work. sorry, boss, but i'm having a ball today and frank mallicoat is, too. what's going on? >> reporter: take a look at
12:07 pm
this crowd. black and orange, yeah, these guys they're all giants fans and we lost frank in the crowd. take a look, here he is! >> reporter: i am trying to find my inner mike sugerman and i think i have. along with the fans out here, i cannot hear a thing but you're from l.a., what are you doing here? >> it was worth the drive. i left last night and got here this morning at three. >> reporter: did you drop the blue duds to put on the orange? >> i never wear that. all the time! i'm from the bay but i live in l.a. >> reporter: angel pagan was on the monitor and he got a lot of yahoos from you gals. >> yeah, he's super good looking. >> reporter: what about the beard? >> i'm not a fan but it doesn't matter. >> reporter: i'm working on it. he has a nice beard working here.
12:08 pm
i say pagan, ladies, you say? [ cheering ]. >> reporter: are you ready for this to get started? [ crowdcheering yes ]. >> reporter: are you tired [ crowd cheerin ]. >> reporter: they're coming our way soon. we have about a half million at the plaza and here's the man with the broom. >> all day, all day! sweep, sweep, sweep! >> you know what's amazing, frank mallicoat and michelle they do a bangup job in the morning and people don't realize but frank is actually 7- 1/2 feet tall. that's why you can see him there in the crowd. >> right now he's feeling like he's 7-1/2 feet tall. >> pablo waving to the crowd there. when the pablo, the panda hats came out, dennis, that was something new in baseball. we hadn't seen too much of that, and i don't recall any
12:09 pm
other team having that kind of animal hat, something you could buy at the ballpark and wear to the game. it was kind of revolutionary when it came out in 2010. >> the thing about panda and i think this comes through with the fans, is he just enjoys playing baseball. he doesn't take it too seriously. he's a lot of frivolity from him in the giants clubhouse. you can see the way he plays baseball and similar to this guy right here, this guy in some ways is -- is a fan favorite, just because of the way he carries himself. >> yeah, of course with sergio romo right there going by waving, sanchez and what a role he played when posey needed a rest. you had to bring in a back-up catcher. >> i'll say this about brian wilson, he was always there this year. he didn't just show up in the last couple of weeks. he was always there for support, and despite the fact
12:10 pm
that he's going to have to come back there a second shoulder injury, that's going to be very difficult. i think his career is in question right now, that's why romo's performance was so important. but this guy was always there and i was impress wed that. he carried himself very well. >> i look at it this way, if the baseball career ends because of the physical, you know, problems that he may or may not have, he can always get a job as one of the seven dwarfs. >> there you go, if he loses a couple of feet in stature. >> that will work. >> i was impressed with the way he handled himself even not being a part of the team. >> the guys that maybe didn't play every day, the eli white sides, the brian wilsons from the dugout who, you when you look at this taep, it's almost like a family.
12:11 pm
>> the slogan for them is we're all giants. there are big players on this team, that play such a big role and that's really the way the organization -- that's not by accident, ken, it's built that way. if you go back two years ago, remember cody ross was brought in, pat burrell and guys like theriot this year, not a significant role but a very small role but very important one when you look towards the end of the year. >> who's going to forget that slide in game 4 that turned out to be the winning run and deciding factor. >> exactly. so this is -- it's all by design. >> you know the other thing dennis is the older i get the more i realize how young these guys are. they have families with little kids and that's the beautiful part of this, too, is we don't see the wives and girlfriends and kids that much. they're just our heros that are out on the diamond but they have families and it's so nice for them to have to put up with baseball and the travel and all those months, getting a little bit of the reward today.
12:12 pm
>> that's the one thing i always think about baseball players and people think it's glamorous, and it is, don't get me wrong, but you're away from your family a very significant part-time, so towards the end of the year we started seeing the wives outside the clubhouse and sharing in the experience. then the kids started coming around. the kids have been on the ride for the last couple of weeks. >> the other part of that is getting five months off. >> and a lot of money, right? >> we watch some of the bands playing, so much of the community is here today and celebrating with the giants. and you can't [ indiscernible ] and amazing site. mig sugerman has been taking it in -- mike sugerman has been taking it all in. >> reporter: lucille, what's it like being here? somebody translate? is it good being here? yeah, yeah yeah.
12:13 pm
is it better than a second time or the first time? yeah, yeah. what are you do in the offseason, by the way? you sleep. you go back to the cold? i'll let you get back of that's lucille. who else we got here? the media. we don't need them. the medical training staff. i told you all the mayors came by, all the coaches. jeremy affeldt will be the first player. who are you guys? >> family of flanery. >> reporter: there's somebody. the coach's family. >> thaerlt. that's right. here we got? all right, chinese parade. that's loud out here. these people are -- they've been waiting out here for seven, eight hours, they haven't seen a player yet. >> we're looking at one right
12:14 pm
now, mark marco scutaro, real epit epitomizes the success story of the giants this year. without scoot, they don't win the world series. >> they got him for a minor leaguer who was a 2nd baseman and scutaro was arguably -- i don't think arguably, he's probably brian sabean's best mid season acquisition. he hit .362 after coming over from colorado and game the team's no. 2 hitter and he solidified a position that was kind of weak at that point and he was -- he was outstanding. >> you know, he's back twice but almost the elder states man at 36 years old. a lot of people remember when he played for the a's. barry zito we see waving. he was a double cy young award winner playing for the a's as well and barry zito, what and amazing postseason he had. >> first of all, they have to make a decision on scutaro. i think he's coming back.
12:15 pm
he actually just turned 37 but i think that he has been to be resigned because they don't have a 2nd baseman available from the minor league. as far as barry zito what zito's performance did, basically, ken, mean that he's under contract for next season as is the entire starting rotation. now you can look at the rotation next year and say this thing is rock solid. i think lincecum is and issue because his velocity has gone down on his fastball from 95 to 92, but if you look at zito, he's become a 15-game winner and resurrected his career this year with the fastball at about 85, 87 miles per hour. so i think lincecum can take a page out of zito's book and understand it not all about striking guys out. lincecum may now be at the stage of his career, even though he's 28, he's going to have to make a tradition away from a power pitcher. >> zito pushing 35 years old,
12:16 pm
too, he was a comfort for a lot of the younger players who watched this guy cool as a cucumber come in under incredibly intense pressure to perform. a series hung on his performance and he delivered. that is what it's all about. that's why these guys get the money they get. that's why they get the top billing is because they deliver when they have to. >> but i think if everybody's eyes, barry zito was a bust up to this season. symbolic of why you don't sign a pitcher to a long-term contract. he never lived up to the expectations until this year. >> worth the money now? >> well, i would say so because they won a world series. i spoke with peter mcgowan in the giants locker room in st. louis and mcgowan, first time i've seen him in a clubhouse for the first time and he spoke so fondly, almost like a father figure because mcgowan is the guy who decided to sign barry zito. i think there was so much
12:17 pm
weight on his shoulders for making the controversial decision which some people believe played a part where mcgowan is no longer the general manager. >> people broke it apart, thee theorized the giants -- they near rise the giants needed to get a big player after barry bonds. >> it was not a good decision up until this year. but i tell you what, it was barry zito's pitching performance against st. louis that in my opinion changed everything. >> that was the turning point. >> after zito's stunning performance in st. louis, pitching is contagious they say, right, ken? every pitcher in that rotation found their mojo following zito's lead. vogelsong rediscovered it, cain rediscovered it, lincecum out of the bull pen and buzz bissinger who was shaky. they were -- and madison
12:18 pm
bumgarner. >> you're looking at a copy of the trophy. that's not the real one. the real one when giants returned to at&t park this past month was sitting in a front seat with guess who? bruce bochy and he's the guy that really walked it off the bus and we're glad to have it back where it belongs in san francisco. you stay right where you belong because we're coming back with the giants world champions parade of champions. we'll be right back. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
12:19 pm
12:20 pm
the day that it rained, talk about a blessing. and when it came down, i think as team people they generally like each other. there's a sense of camaraderie, sense of familiar and family, you know, in the sense of spirit, in the sense of unity and this is the only time that everybody is walking and happy
12:21 pm
and smiling and why not, there's just this -- and i don't know, there's just this genuine feeling. >> reporter: i have to tell you these giants fans are some loyal and die hard fans of we have joe right here, he camped out overnight. you were here at 8:00 last night. you were here two years ago when the giants won the world series. what is different? >> i came here two years ago at 10:00 in the morning and i was at the back of the crowd and i came here last night and now i'm at the front of the crowd. >> reporter: more energy? >> and it's a more magical. >> reporter: have a great time. frank, you have a couple people with you. >> reporter: i have robert from manteca. what time did you get here this morning? >> we got here at 11:00 last night but we slept in my car for a couple hours. >> reporter: you slept in your car? did you see mayor lee's jacket? >> beautiful colors. >> reporter: what did you think? >> very bright. very colorful. >> reporter: i'm here to tell
12:22 pm
you, folks, we found the extension cord to mayor lee's jacket. we have unplugged it and when he speaks out here in 15, 20 minutes, it won't be so bright. >> reporter: that was his joke. >> thank you. and i was just talking to our meteorologist lawrence cano told me the champagne will not rain on the parade. >> reporter: it's raining confetti. brandon you were a 5-year-old kid rooting for the giants. what must be going through your head? >> it's unbelievable. it really is a dream come true. i wanted to play with the giants. when i was in that 5-year-old picture i wanted to play for them and 20 years later actually coming true, it's awesome. >> reporter: how long you going to be a giant?
12:23 pm
>> hopefully a long time. >> reporter: we heard it there. braung, brandon crawford. the players have finally showed up at this part. santiago, tell your fans what you want -- what they want to hear you say? >> we been so happy because a lot of people here, so it's unbelievable. you know. be so happy today and we win the world series and people in san francisco happy, it's amazing. >> reporter: thanks a lot. we got the giants team in alpha bet cal order, helmsley, that's a nifty car. i don't know what that's about. send it back to you guys because it's just nutty out here. >> thank you, mike. >> if control can pull up that picture one more time, brandon crawford. >> he was five years ol.
12:24 pm
>> that's him on the right. this was taken when the giants thought they prayed their last game in san francisco and crawford had gone to the game as a little kid and of course he ends up becoming a major league shortstop with the giants. there's two guys, this parade would not have happened if it was not for two guys. one was bob lury who saved the team from going to toronto, i want to say it was like '76. and lury was one and peter mcgowan stepped up and saved it from leaving again. these are two figures and lob lury still goes to a lot of games and they were -- they saved the giants from leaving san francisco. >> there's juan marichal waving to the crowd. you talk about a superstar in giants history. this -- this is a guy that used to pitch 200 balls a game. the pitch count didn't quit at 8 85.
12:25 pm
>> i think he pitched a 16- inning game once. >> i believe you're right and that's been referred to as the greatest game ever played. . >> the thing about that shortstop, ken, they gave him the starting job, batted .204 in 66 games as a rookie but his offense started to progress in the second half of the season but it's defense that made him critical. >> we'll go to juliette goodrich. i know that you went to the same high school as brandon crawford, foothill in pleasanton. is that right? >> reporter: ken, are you able to hear us? we're along market street right now. i'm going to talk to panda real quickly. how you doing? >> i'm great, i'm very excited at this moment. this is unbelievable, man. people are great. >> reporter: what do you want to say to your fans? >> you know, they root for us, now they deserve this. >> reporter: can you hold up that trophy? i want to take a look at that.
12:26 pm
>> it's great. >> reporter: does it weigh a lot? >> it is, it is. >> reporter: take it easy and congratulations. thanks for your time. all right, ken, again, we're on market street and we're talking to all of these fans who are just so excited to see all the players. >> juliette, juliette, if you can hear me i know that you went to foothill high school, the same high school that brandon crawford went to and i can see the athletic similarities there. you're jogging right along, no problem? >> reporter: oh, my goodness, yes. hs pleasanton and they want to have their own ticker tape parade. >> what kind of athletes is foothill high school turning out? >> you're seeing one right there. juliette, not brandon crawford. >> and zach keen in mobile 5 getting us the shot you will only see on cbs 5 as we look over the crowd at sisk center,
12:27 pm
who waited patiently now for going on 90 minutes for the players to begin arriving and of course, we'll have all of that action for you, the players are going to get up theerks going address the -- get up, they're going to address the crowd. bruce bochy and larry will get up there, probably some of the other notables. the cable cars come rolling down market street. i think about really just a couple weeks ago, how improbable all this was denny when they were down, you know, a couple games right off the bat in the divisional series and it didn't look good for the giants at all. >> what they accomplished was unprecedented in postseason history to come back when you're down two games to none in the first series, of course, the division series, and then they find themselves in the hole against st. louis. no team had done what they did and that's why like you said, hard to believe it would have happened a couple weeks ago. >> just amazing. a guy who keems coming back is
12:28 pm
mike sugerman, he's back with more. >> reporter: i'm here with aubrey huff. aubrey, where's your thong? well, don't like the question about thongs, i guess. that was last year. here's javier lopez. javier! you ever been in anything like this before? >> 2010 is as close as it gets. this one's special in its own. it's unbelievable. the turnout is just as impressive it not more. >> reporter: how does it differ? >> this time it was the hardest act to get here. we saved the torture for everybody in postseason. we're enjoying this for sure. >> reporter: congratulations. they're causing a traffic jam here. shall we talk to some fans? they're finally seeing the players. you're a -- that was tim
12:29 pm
lincecum, javier lopez, how good was it seeing these guys? >> it was good. >> reporter: how old are you? >> nine. >> reporter: you think you'll remember this the rest of your life? >> um-hmm. >> reporter: did you bring him? where's mom? i think they lost mom. i don't know who that is. i don't think that's a player. josi mijares, i know him. he's a relief pitcher. >> they're moving. >> reporter: like the indianapolis speedway out here. >> we're going to take a quick break and get back to mike sugerman and the rest of our crowd. that looked like hunter pence. if it is, we'll catch up to him on the other side of this break as we continue with the giants world championship parade. we'll be right back on cbs 5. ,,
